  • Foundations in Lifestyle Medicine
With board certifications in Internal Medicine and Lifestyle Medicine, I emphasize the prevention and potential reversal of chronic disease through lifestyle factors. Lifestyle Medicine focuses on the 6 pillars of health: nutrition, physical activity, sleep, stress management, strong social connections, and avoidance of risky behaviors. The goal here is to prevent, treat and potentially reverse chronic diseases like obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and heart disease tied to the leading causes of death. Need evidence? A recent June 2024 Alzheimer’s research study by Dr. Dean Ornish that showed the surprising results: big lifestyle changes—without drugs—significantly enhanced cognition and function in early-stage Alzheimer’s patients. This is Lifestyle Medicine in action! Need more proof? Look no further than the Blue Zones.
  • Blue Zones: Blueprints from the oldest people on Earth
Blue Zones are regions around the world with high concentrations of the longest lived people - people who live significantly longer lives (centenarians are people living to 100 years or older) compared to worldwide averages and with low rates of chronic disease. Through demographic and epidemiological studies, Blue Zones Author Dan Buettner with a team of researchers attributed the difference largely to lifestyle factors like diet, movement and social practices. This goes to show that healthy habits are the key for lifelong health. The Blue Zones are located in Okinawa (Japan), Sardinia (Italy), Nicoya (Costa Rica), Ikaria (Greece), and Loma Linda (California, USA).
